Jeep Tech Talk [New Thread]
Subject: Jeep Stalling and Start Probs...Just like the rest of Jeeps
Posted By: David Reid
Date: 5/16/2007 9:42:00 PM

Hello,
Like sooooo many others with the Jeeps stalling and not wanting to start, I to have been struggling with my 1996 Jeep GC for many months now, replaced multiple fuel pumps, crank sensors, etc...etc....etc..
Latest, Dealer says its the wire harness to the computer that is causing all of the ongoing problems, but Jeep does NOT make it anymore, sorry cant help you. Towed the Jeep home.
Searching the net for more answers it seems that this issue has been around for a very long time.
A Technical Service Bullentin dated Oct. 18, 1996 might just shed some light on the subject.
The items they list with electrical connection problems are ALL of the same items we keep replacing, to no avail.
Here is the info, I will be checking mine, wire by wire this weekend. There is a picture that I can not post here that gives part numbers, Insulator part number, terminal part number, wedge lock, end seal, and ring seal part numbers. If you need them...feel free to contact me.
Although it lists specific years, I am sure this applies to many many many more.
Jeep needs to do a recall.

Wiring Harness - Connector Repair Package

NO: 08-21-96 Rev.A

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Oct. 18, 1996

SUBJECT:
Wiring Harness Connector Repair Packages

NOTE : THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 08-21-96, DATED JUL. 26, 1996, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS**.

MODELS:

1996 (AB) Ram Van/Wagon
1996 (AN) Dakota
1996 (BR) Ram Truck
1996 (XJ) Cherokee
1996 (ZJ) Grand Cherokee
1997 (TJ) Wrangler

NOTE : THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO THE 1996 VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE AND 1997 WRANGLERS BUILT PRIOR TO JULY 15TH, 1996 (MDH 0715XX).

**ALSO, CHEROKEES (XJ) BUILT ON JULY 15TH, 1996 (MDH 0715XX) OR AFTER WERE BUILT WITH 1997 STYLE WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS AND ARE NOT EFFECTED BY THIS BULLETIN.**

DISCUSSION:

Intermittent electrical complaints can be caused by poor electrical connections and can be very difficult to diagnose. Once diagnosed, the repair can be anywhere from simply reconnecting an electrical connector to complete wiring harness replacement. The following drivetrain electrical connector repair components have recently been made available to aid in drivetrain electrical repairs without replacing a complete harness. If you have determined that a customer complaint could be related to a poor electrical connection, use the following diagnosis to inspect the electrical connectors.

DIAGNOSIS:

This bulletin involves only electrical connections to the following components:

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor
Oxygen (02) Sensor
Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor
Distributor "Sync" Position Sensor
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
Fuel Injector
Ignition Coil
Idle Air Control (IAC) Motor
Purge Solenoid
Transmission Solenoid (8-way)
Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor and Gauge Sending Unit

Inspection of the connector begins with a thorough inspection of the insulator. If the insulator's locking tab is broke, replace the insulator. If the insulator's end seal or seal ring is damaged, replace the seal. Gently pull on the wires of the connector one at a time. If the wire pulls out of the insulator, remove and inspect the wedge lock. Also, inspect the locking tab inside the insulator. Replace the wedge lock if there are any signs of damage. Replace the insulator if the locking tab is damaged.

Inspect all wire terminals for corrosion. If corrosion is evident, replace the terminal ends and both insulator seals. To verify how secure the terminal fits to the component, insert and remove the harness side connector terminal onto the mating terminal of the component. Then, rotate the terminal 900,1800, and 2700 while inserting and removing the terminal onto the pin of the component.

NOTE : YOU WILL NEED TO INDIVIDUALLY CHECK EACH TERMINAL-TO-PIN CONNECTION FOR ANY MULTI-TERMINAL CONNECTOR.

If any connection is loose, replace the harness side connector terminal after verifying a good connection with the new terminal. For information regarding service procedures of electrical connectors, refer to Section 8W of the appropriate Service Manual.

I have a 2004 Jeep Wrangler (4 cylinder, automatic transmission). I've had a recurring problem with the transfer case - it's needed to be replaced twice. I haven't driven the vehicle off-road yet (only city and highway driving). Is there any reason why the transfer case could be repeatedly failing?

Subject: 99 Jeep Cherokee sport (passenger door won't open)

Passenger door on drivers side won't open. Some one smashed two of my windows and stole my stereo. The vent window on the drivers side passenger door can't be replaced until I get my door open. I removed the inside panel and pushed the release manually and that didn't work. I had someone hold down release while I kicked door( that tecniche worked on rear hatch but unfortunatly did not work in this situation. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.

Subject: 98 tj 4 cyl high idle
Posted By: carl raymer
Date: 5/12/2007 4:37:00 PM

I have a problem with my 98 TJ, (5 Speed, 4 cylinder)in neutral the idle is over 2 grand. I thought it was some bad gas, so I ran the tank dry and filled it with high octane and injection cleaner, it seemed like it was getting better (idle dropped to about 1800 RPMs) but after about half a tank its back to idle over 2 grand. I have read that it may be the TPS but i don't know how to check it.
Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Subject: '97 Jeep Wrangler running rough
Posted By: Tracy Harp
Date: 5/11/2007 4:04:00 PM

My husband has a 97 Jeep Wrangler that is having problems. I am having to drive it while he is away and it will periodically appear to not get fuel. The engine continues to run but it won't go. You have to pump the gas several time and it seems to choke, for lack of a better word. I took it into a mechanic and they are stumped so I thought I would take to the internet before going to the dealer. The mechanic had another Jeep in for the same issue so I am hoping someone has some insight. Thanks for any help you can give a poor wife!!

Subject: Front Wipers

Date: 5/11/2007 11:50:00 AM

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. In the Northeast we had a snowstorm on 2/14 and since then my wipers are not working correctly. The problem is described below.

Low and High Speeds work correcly. When I turn them off they do not park in the correct spot. They will stop wherever they are when I turn the wiper off.
In delay mode, the wiper will not park correctly. Most of the time the wiper parks in the up/down position.

Is it a module or the wiper motor that is causing this problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a '98 Cherokee Sport, 4.0L that I bought at an auction. The car has been great overall, but lately I've had a problem with stalling, or threat of stalling while idle, and as soon as I begin driving. When I get into the car after it's been sitting for a few hours it will hesitate during acceleration, and sometimes there will be no response to the accelerator. After driving for around one minute the problem disappears, and the car runs great. I've also noticed that if I remain parked for a minute or so and just give it a bit of gas before driving away the problem will not occur.

I'm thinking of selling this car after the summer, and am worried that this problem will prevent someone from purchasing, and would definitely like to repair.

Any suggestions?

Subject: Interior Lights
Posted By: Kyle McCullough
Date: 5/7/2007 7:55:00 PM

Hey again, I have another question or two this time regarding lighting.

I found these neon lights that I like that go on the interior of the car. They're like light bars, I guess you could say. I was thinking of putting one somewhere on the interior of my car (1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport), and I'm pretty sure I would like them to come on when the door opens. I was looking at this product (among many others) and they're all similar in saying that I need to wire them to a 12v power source.

I've searched online but couldn't really find any help. Is there a possible way towards going about doing this? You can't really see the wiring in the package, but I see that they are just plain wires (meaning, there is no special connector like wiring harnesses have). Any help is greatly appreicated!!

Onto my 2nd question (sorry to slam this all on you!): I want to add Fog lights to my jeep, and I see that they come with a wiring harness. Before I go and purchase it and start drilling holes in my car, I wanted to know where and how I would connect this wiring harness. The package comes with a toggle switch that I can install into the dashboard of my car (i have a blank spot for a switch).
Again, any ideas on connections and such?

Thanks again so much for all the help in advance!!

Subject: my 94 Cherokee is throwing up! (part question)

Hey everyone who knows and love Jeeps...

So here is the deal. I just got my brakes worked on and the dealership was so kind as to give me a laundrylist of things wrong with my jeep. Thing is, if I had the money to fix my car, I would have a newer jeep.

Here is the problem. My car throws up its coolant. Coolant leaking has always been a minor problem, I have replaced the upper and lower radiator hose, heater hoses, thermostat, that belt and something else I can't remember. THis time with the help of a random stranger I found the new leak...the hose that connects the coolant reserve to the radiator has a little plastic piece that attaches right under the radiator cap and it has snapped.

Does anyone know if that can be replaced without taking the radiator out or costing me a small fortune? And hey if you know of any good jeep mechanics in south florida let me know! thanks!

Please advise.

1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ

My jeep does not have any spark when i turn it over, it cranks but the engine
does not turn over,i tried taking off the spark plugs, cleaning then with a power wire brush, i tried aking off the ingiton coil to test it( how do u properly test an igniton coil by the way?), i tried bypassing the plug for the crankshaft position censor by resplicing the wires, i had 2 burnt fuses for the alternators i changed them and it still doesnt turn over, its definonatly not the battery or starter, it cranks fine, lots of power it just wont turn over because theres no spark. What could be causing this?...
i need help with this.....i also need info on how to see if a crankshaft position censor is bad, and also info on how to test the ingition coil.. thanks.... mike.
