My cherokee has a death wobble when I hit a bump going from 55-65 mph. the entire front end shakes violently. I posted before and I was told to change my steering stabilizer, I did that and the problem persists. I have since changed the stabilizer bar sway links and the problem is still there, is there something else I can try before going to my mechanic?

you should try changing the shocks. they might be shot. this prblm happened to my 1995 wrangler and when i changed the shocks, the ride is fine. i would recommend the rancho rs5000 shocks. they are a great shock for a good price.

I actually came to this site with the same problem, hoping to find an answer. I own a 1998 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and the first time my Wrangler did this shakling violently I was terrified. I have noticed now however that when you brake (to slow down car you feel like you'll flip right over cause the whole car is shaking so badly)and right about 40 mph it stops. This happened to me 3 times yesterday while driving home from a family dinner, on the busy interstate, which makes it even more terrifying. and the bumps arent even BIG bumps...
I would live to find out what this is, so any help would be much appreciated.

Most likely steering stabilizer shot - looks like a shock absorber at the front of the vehichle. Good news - should be cheap...bad news - look at your tires - if they are close to bad better replace them - that is what often times causes this in Jeeps and new stabilizer w/ bad tires = bad/new stabilizer. Good luck

I have the same problem with my 96 Grand Cherokee. I have had the steering stabilizer shock replaced...still happens. At one time, it started doing it everytime I hit 50mph, that ended up being a tire that needed to be balanced. Still happens when I hit a bump on the highway though. I have also replaced the front shocks. If you have fixed yours, please let me know how you did it. No one can figure out what is wrong with mine.

Thanks.

I know that you had posted about the problem with your jeep awhile back but I think I found the problem with my jeep and thought that I would email you with some type of advice, from me and the websites that I have visited in hopes of fixing this. Here is a check list of things that I replaced the last being the one that fixed it.

1. replace the steering stabilizer
2. replacing the sway bar link arm's
3. replacing the front track arm and it's bushings.
4. replacing the front rotors, pads and calipers.
5. replacing the front shocks.

after that my problem was fixed, drives like the day that I got it.

also if you know someone who knows card. there is a website that I got all of the parts for about half of what Napa wanted for all of them.

www.rockauto.com

good communication and fast fed ex shipping

hope this helps

I had something like a death wobble on my 96 Cherokee Sport. Tried a few things like shocks and alignment but it turned out that the tires were worn and new tires solved the problem. BTW, the wobble was uncontrollable and scary. Check your tires.

I had the same problem. I replaced the shocks and the stearing stabilizer to no avail. The problem was the bushings that connect the various components of the stearing system like the tie rod ends. I don't know the names of all the components, but if you look under you can identify the bushings and see if they look decayed. On jeeps with lots of miles they can get covered with oil and grease which over time will cause them to decay.

I am having the same problem, the cause is probably the steering damper, connected to the steering linkage. It is basically a shock absorber. I have already ordered mine on-line. Any muffler or brake shop should be able to diagnose this problem for you.

Hi. I am having the same problem with mine. When I get on the highway only and I hit a bump at 65 to 70mph, I actually have to pull over and stop. I was wondering if you figured out what it was? I was told that my damper looked a little rpough so I am porbably going to replace it. But maybe if you can let me know what you have tried I can go from there.
Thanks, April

My 95 Cherokee started doing this same thing about two weeks ago. To be honest, Replace the track bar, sway bar bushings, controll arm bushings, and every other bushings you can. Steering stablizer is a good idea, but more than likely isn't the problem. Tires should definatly be checked out, but an unbalenced tire isn't quite the same type of wobble as he one you're having.

DOOD!!!
Notice the dates!!

This was started and went around originally in August 2004 and the only post after 8/04 was in 2006.

It's been 4 YEARS since the conveersation went on!! I think they probably have either resolved the issue and/or have moved on to another vehicle or at least another issue.
